My life was just average, simply boring at best,
Although as a youth it seemed a harsh and cruel test.
Seemingly never changing, though about to reroute,
By much time and effort, Tamerlane came about.

Writing stories of fiction, macabre, and death,
Few understood me; but nevertheless,
Well-known, I became, the more that I wrote.
Until one dark day, my wife, she had croaked.

Without a reason, save preserving sanity,
I wrote the haunting rime of Annabel Lee
Of days long since past with the love of my life.
Each day was horrific to bear with the absence of wife.

My mind grew more twisted, albeit hard to believe
